It is so awesome to read them and think of how relevant they are to our lives. Whether that is by personal struggles as seen in David's own life or the mighty praises cried out to God for His wondrous mercy and steadfast righteousness, we are continuously shown the faithfulness of God. I pray that God will open your eyes to see Him for who He really is and to understand how great He is for the sacrifice of His own Son on the Cross. If you remember what I mentioned on Wednesday night, I had said that our worship should be an overflow of our love for God. This overflow comes from personal devotions, consistent prayer, and the realization that God is Mighty in His creation, Mighty in His righteousness, and Mighty in His saving grace.

Psalm 40

God Sustains His Servant.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

<sup id="en-NASB-14527">1</sup>I waited patiently for the LORD;
And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
2He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
<sup id="en-NASB-14529">3</sup>He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the LORD.
4How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust,
And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.
5Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done,
And Your thoughts toward us;
There is none to compare with You
If I would declare and speak of them,
They would be too numerous to count.
<sup id="en-NASB-14532">6</sup>Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired;
<sup id="en-NASB-14538">12</sup>For evils beyond number have surrounded me;
My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my heart has failed me.
<sup id="en-NASB-14539">13</sup>Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me;
Make haste, O LORD, to help me.
14Let those be ashamed and humiliated together
I walked away from the conference with the song "mighty to save" stuck in my head. I felt it necessary to share with you all the power of this song and how true it is for us to see Jesus as the Mighty King who has, who is, and who will work wonders in our lives if we stay faithful to Him. To think of God coming down as a human in Jesus Christ, then enduring all the pain inflicted on His body is just unimaginable. Yet, through His pain and death Jesus Christ rose and conquered the grave defeating death and sin. As the song plays I want you to meditate on the words and really give God the glory for giving you life in Christ Jesus. He is the author of our lives and the perfecter of our faith. Praise Him for what He has done and will continue to do in our lives. God is Mighty to Save and there is no feat He cannot do. Pray for faithfulness in the cross.

When Does Revival Start?

So many times we get caught up in the ideas of how to bring revival to our churches. There are plenty of studies done about true revival and more creative ways to get people to love God with all their heart. But when you come down to it, there is nothing that can give you a sincere heart for God other than His Word and understanding who God really is. If we want a personal revival we must look inside ourselves and see what exactly we are filling our souls with. Whether that be money, material things, social status, etc., nothing can compare to the awesome God who gave us Jesus Christ on the Cross. As the song plays, try and focus on the words that Ross King sings and accept that we must put God back on His throne and fully come to grips with the fact that we need Him over anything else this world can offer up. Only then will we be able to have a true revival within ourselves. Our hearts will be broken, our mind will be open to the Word, and it is at that point that God will build us up.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!

For those that don't know already, I love football and what better way to celebrate the biggest game of the year than by having our youth football game, family chili-cook off, and watch the game on a large projection screen with other brothers and sisters in Christ. Plus, this is going to be a great chance for you to bring along your friends so that they can hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The party kicks off around 3:30pm at Powhatan High School with our youth football game and continues at 5pm in Old Powhatan's fellowship hall with the chili cook-off. Reading Psalm 50 quickly reminded me of how we are in constant need of God and His provisions for our life. If He is really the all knowing all powerful God we say He is, then why do we treat Him as though He owes us something? What is just awesome to think about is that God does not need our praise or thanks. He doesn't even need us to for anything that could possibly give way to His kingdom. Yet, He loves us with such an unconditional love that He does provide for us. He provides our breath everyday, the food we eat, and the livelihood so that we can recognize that He is God alone and He is worthy of all our praise. And He provided the ultimate sacrifice in Jesus Christ that we may have salvation through Him. What a God! That is the purest form of unconditional love you will ever find. As you read Psalm 50, pray on how great God's love is for you and how much you are in need of Him.

(Psa 50:1) A Psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
(Psa 50:2) Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
(Psa 50:3) Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest.
(Psa 50:4) He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
(Psa 50:5) "Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!"
(Psa 50:6) The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah
(Psa 50:7) "Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
(Psa 50:8) Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
(Psa 50:9) I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds.
(Psa 50:10) For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
(Psa 50:11) I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine.
(Psa 50:12) "If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.
(Psa 50:13) Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
(Psa 50:14) Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High,
(Psa 50:15) and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me."
(Psa 50:16) But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?
(Psa 50:17) For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
(Psa 50:18) If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.
(Psa 50:19) "You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
(Psa 50:20) You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.
(Psa 50:21) These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. Through times of persecution and turmoil they did not stop. They knew God's dwelling place was the most important aspect of their lives. If we read during the beginning of their rebuilding, we can see that they had to have the altar built first. Why? It was the focal point for the temple sacrifices. The Israelites would offer many sin offerings to atone or cover the wrongdoings against God. This was a constant ritual because each offering could not cover their future sins. It was not until the death of Christ, the final sacrifice, where we can realize that the blood of Jesus was shed for all sins. We have been forgiven once and for all, but we must take to heart the reality of Jesus' death and the penalty that was paid for our sins. We should always remember that the Cross is our altar and whenever in trouble or need the Cross is where we go. The Israelites built the temple despite their fear of sinning against God and even though we may have messed up and are afraid of coming before God, He is always there waiting at the Cross. We are made perfect through the perfect Lamb that was slain on the Cross.

Check out my Slide Show!

Fall Festival/Tailgate Party/Youth Sunday/Lock-In

Well as you can see from the title, we have a bunch of stuff going on in the next few weeks. Let me start off with the Fall Festival which is this Saturday from 3-6pm and we are still in need of a few more workers! Please remember where you are working if you have already signed up!

There will be another tailgate party this coming Friday on Nov. 2nd. Everyone is invited and it will start @ 5:30pm. We will have free hot dogs (grill cooked), drinks, and live music. I believe this will be the last tailgate party of the year so come out and support our youth band No Vacancy!

Next, is our Youth Sunday on Nov. 4th. I still have spots open for Ushers, Greeters, Announcements, Lead Prayer, and Children's Sermon. If you want to participate, the sign-up sheet will be in the welcome center on Sunday and on our info table next Wednesday.

Finally, there is the much awaited Lock-In on Nov. 9-10th @ 6pm. God has His judgment against all that is sinful because He is holy and separated from the world. He stands for all that is righteous and never forgets His standards. With this in mind, we can grasp His Sovereignty. He has authority over all since He is the one who created everything. Your life, my life, the animals, the trees, mountains, and all we see is under His power. Yet, with this wonderful power He has this great mercy that extends to every corner of the earth. From the time when He "remembered" Noah and Abraham to the time where He remembered us at the Cross, God has this undying love in which He wants nothing more than our obedience and faith. He deserves all the glory, honor, and praise. Without His merciful grace, we are short of the glory of God.

Concentrate on God and His characteristics the rest of the week. Fully come before Him and praise Him for who He really is.

Thinking through Scripture

As you all begin to dive into your reading plan, there are a few things that you should concentrate on...

First, keep in mind the holiness of God which is seen throughout Scripture. God is constantly on His throne judging against the sin of this world. Now with that in mind, understand God's mercy through the many instances where He forgives Israel for their wickedness just to keep His promise that was made to Abraham in Genesis 22:15-18 (ESV)

"And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, ‘By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice."

We see His mercy continued into the New Testament where instead of punishing us for our sins like we deserved, he sent His one and only son Jesus Christ to take the burden of sin off of the world. Yet, we cannot treat His mercy cheaply but we have to revere God for who He is and accept the sacrifice with a turning-from-sin attitude. Acknowledging the sacrifice and fully committing our lives to it are two completely different view points.

Lastly, lets not forget about the Sovereignty of God. He rules with an iron scepter and knows exactly what is going to happen. In Scripture we find out how things connect to one other so that in the end God will receive all the glory. Truly focus on how each event follows a sequence of patterns and how God uses specific people to further His plans.

It is by these things that we see the character of God and how He does not change from the Old to the New Testament.

Bible Truth - The Passion of the Ancient Writers

"When it comes to Bible truth, many critics argue that the early Church deliberately corrupted the Bible's text for its own agenda. As for this argument, ask yourself one question: would a group of men who were willing to suffer terrible persecution and die horrible deaths in defense of the Scriptures be guilty of corrupting those very same Scriptures? That's lunacy! If they corrupted the Scriptures, or knowingly allowed them to be corrupted, that would mean they knowingly suffered and died for a lie! No one suffers and dies for a lie! For example, the September 11th suicide hijackers may have sincerely believed in what they died for, but they weren't in a position to know whether or not what they believed was true; they put their faith in traditions passed down to them over many generations. They didn't knowingly die for a lie; they died for a lie in ignorance.

In contrast, the New Testament's martyrs either saw what they claimed to see or they didn't; plain and simple. Either they interacted with the resurrected Christ or they didn't. They certainly knew whether or not their testimony was true! Nevertheless, these men clung to their testimonies, even to their brutal deaths at the hands of their persecutors, and despite being given every chance to recant, knowing full well whether their testimony was true or false. Why would so many men knowingly die for a lie? They had nothing to gain for lying and obviously everything to lose."

If the disciples would die for the truth in a world of religious persecution, why then are we scared to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a nation that gives us religious freedom? Most of the time we are worried about what other people think about us or that we may lose our friends. The cost of taking up our cross and following Christ here in this world may require everything, but in the end we will gain it all back through the eternal promise of the blood shed at calvary.

RURITAN DINNER!!!!!

As a reminder...we are serving the Ruritans on Monday @ 7pm. Here is a quote by James MacDonald:

"Our generation struggles and wallows in cheap grace and shallow sanctification because we have departed from the biblical picture of God's holy and exalted nature. God is not the "man upstairs" or "Big Daddy" or some old codger with a long, white beard. God is not whatever my conscience or imagination would like Him to be. God is indescribable glory, and He dwells in unapproachable light. "God is a consuming fire" (Heb 12:29). In a single word: holy! God is infinite holiness."

We are separated by God because he is just that much greater, perfect, and holier than us. We can't even fathom or describe what He is in our modern English language. It is only by the cross that the veil is lifted and we are seen holy by God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Lets focus for the next two days on God's holiness and how He is perfect through His creation and the sacrifice that was needed to take place for us to have that eternal inheritance. Without Him we are nothing, through Him we have everything.

Christian Meditation

Lets look at the true definition of what Christian meditation is:

To dwell or contemplate on some truth or reality already revealed by God.

Here, John MacArthur explains how when we focus or meditate on God, it should be on Him alone. If we meditate on anything that is not godly it becomes an idol in our life.

John MacArthur:

"If you want a whole life, if you want your life to be what it should be, you don’t put yourself in some weird physical position, empty your mind, center on yourself and try to relieve your stress. You go to the Word of God, to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, you embrace in faith the sacrifice of Christ in his death and resurrection as your savior and redeemer. God comes, regenerates you, transforms your life, makes you a new creation, and you’re saved and you’re on your way to heaven, and you can live a life of peace and joy. That’s the promise of the Gospel. There is no contribution made to that by any physical position or any kind of meditation. (meditation centered on yourself)

"The idea of Christianity is to fill your mind with biblical truth and focus on the God who is above you. That’s Christian worship. The idea (for example) of yoga is to fill your mind with nothing except to focus on yourself and try to find the god that is inside of you. From a Christian viewpoint, that’s a false religion. Exercise is a different issue."

Until we meet again next week, I challenge everyone to study over Philippians 4:8 and understand how to focus on and get influenced by what is godly.

"Finally, brethren, whatever things oar true, whatever thing are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--*think on these things."

*most of your bibles have the word "think", yet it can easily take on the meaning of the words focus or meditate

Spiritual Disciplines

As I mentioned in yesterdays sermon, here are the spiritual disciplines that will help us to strive to become more like Christ and keep us prepared and focused for Wednesday nights.

Our Constant Bible Intake

Our Constant Prayer Life

Our Constant Worship

Our Love for Serving Others

Our Desire for Solitude with God

Our Desire to Learn the Word of God

Our Desire to Spread the Gospel

Our Desire to Want Nothing Else but Christ

We must always remember to have joy in disciplining ourselves or it is going to become a labor intensive struggle to become godly. Webb is explaining how we (the church) are the bride who has been cheating on (Christ) the bridegroom in the way we go about our lives. We say we are true Christians yet once we step out of the sanctuary we become consumed by the world's desires. Christ died for us to fully put our trust in Him and turn from our sins. His grace should not be treated as cheap, but rather understood as the ultimate price for why we have salvation. So many of us decide that it is easier to side with our unbelieving friends that we completely miss the mark Christ left on us. Over and over we crucify the one who saved us. Let us turn our focus from the sin we constantly fall into and change the church into what it is supposed to be.
